According to the author in the traditional story of St. Nicholas there is an image of the gospel. It was actually such a great article that my wife and I are sending it out as our Xmas card. But yes, the American, commercialized, 'rewards/punishment for good/bad behavior,' Santa is much further from the purposes of the Gospel in the latest issue of Relevant magazine they have a good article about how to ‘reclaim’ Santa for the purposes of Christ.
