the “blog” of “unnecessary” quotation marks

i love, love, love this blog (found via b.c.), because i hate, hate, hate our culture’s slow slide into more and more mis-use of quotation marks.

I hate the over-use of quotes too. My favorite is a sign in the town where I live that says “Jesus” is coming. Hilarious.

This reminds me of Chris Farley on SNL as Bennett Brauer. Have you seen it? So funny! :)

Yeah…just noticed the Chris Farley skit on his site.

BWAAH!!!! The “people” at our “church” not only use “quotes” excessively and in the “wrong places” but they also use ‘single quotes’ for ‘everything’. And you better not ‘attempt’ to proof ‘any’ “publications” or you “will” get ‘your head chopped off!’ They ‘acted’ like “I” was and ‘alien’ when I asked for a quick ‘proof read’ on something.

Those pesky youth ‘pastors’ “think” they “know” grammar!? Grrrr.

Everyone needs to read one of the best books ever . . . Eats, Shoots, and Leaves. It deals with the ridiculous and hilarious misuses of punctuation so common today. I am annoyed to no end by the wrong uses of apostrophes.

Hilarious! This is like my personal pet peeve of the misuse of the word “literally”. Example: during a football game, the announcer said that the defensive player “literally blew up” the offensive player he tackled.
Have any more examples of this?

I hadn’t noticed the quotes so much as the use of ‘s to indicate plurals. Now THAT is annoying.

YES! This is one of my biggest pet peeves ever…but sometimes can be pretty funny if you read into what the quotation marks might mean if the writer had used them intentionally and accurately. And I, too, agree that the misuse of apostrophes is a close second – amazing how many professionally produced materials or permanent signs contain this common error…
