gravity

December 3, 2008 · 7 comments

not too long ago, my friend todd played and sang john mayer’s song “gravity” in church (he nailed it, btw, including the guitar part). i’ve liked mayer for a while, and totally knew this song; but i don’t think i’d ever really paid attention to the lyrics.

they’re stunning. and so frickin’ honest. oof.

Gravity is working against me
And gravity wants to bring me down

Oh I’ll never know what makes this man
With all the love that his heart can stand
Dream of ways to throw it all away

Oh Gravity is working against me
And gravity wants to bring me down

Oh twice as much ain’t twice as good
And can’t sustain like a one half could
It’s wanting more
That’s gonna send me to my knees
(repeat)

Oh gravity, stay the hell away from me
Oh gravity has taken better men than me how can that be?

Just keep me where the light is
Just keep me where the light is
Just keep me where the light is
Come on keep me where the light is
Come on keep me where the light is
Come on keep me where, keep me where the light is

I love this song – the best version is the John Mayer Trio live cut from Try! (one of my favorite albums)

I agree – Todd nailed it!

Marko…Great tune… I broke into the ending of the song in worship one Sunday morning a few weeks after Continuum was released. The song just hit so close to home…and even though we did not sing the entire song..it was cool to see the John Mayer fans sort of look at me and smile… because they totally got it. I love bringing bits and pieces of secular songs into worship. People can relate and then can find worship in all things..even a John Mayer tune or like the Springsteen song we did last week. Great worship moments.

So does “Atmosphere”..been trying to work that ending into worship…”Where ever I go…What ever I do..I wonder where I am in my relationship to you..
