My mistake, I quickly read YM as YS and figured Mark was setting up what they had been about. Thanks for the correction.

Jon,

Bro, go back and re-read the notes again and you'll see that Marko wasn't talking about YS, he was talking about historical YM (youth ministry). Also, if you re-read it, you'll probably notice that everyone was in the same boat, feeling like we've got to be very careful not to treat people as commodities and simply use them to further our own ministry goals.

I could be wrong here, but I think you most likely misread it.

I will admit I did not get through all the notes but I stopped at one point. The place where you explain YS to be about influencing the influencer.

What strikes me is I think that whether it is the language or how you view youth ministry is unhelpful. I think looking at youth ministry as influencing with people influenced by influencers is unhelpful. It objectifies the kid and that we truly do not just love them but have an ultimate goal.

Further "Dave" goes on to say I am looking for that person "who has that something about them." This does not invite all people or allow leaders or youth to feel welcome. Are adults are not all welcomed, leaders are not all welcomed and all youth are not on the same playing field.

Youth are influenced but in the church we cannot be about influence but simply about meeting them where they are at for who they are at with no other idea than being there with them.

This is a job for everyone, not matter if you have that something or not.

oh gosh - this is going to take me a week to digest, mull over and footnote. But the section on pain and leadership/connection .. huge..

great questions - and surely something to thrash out in a broader context??
