The nativity scene is an important symbol of the holiday, but not all interpretations of this scene are in keeping with the spirit of Christmas. In 2013, the internet exploded with new waves of absurd, frightening and just plain unfortunate creches. We’ve rounded up 50 of the weirdest and worst examples.

1-10: Absurd characters

  1. Yoda in the manger – “May Christmas be with you.”
  2. Darth Vader bringing gifts – if the Magi were Sith.
  3. Ronald McDonald as a shepherd – a fast food Christmas.
  4. Alien and Predator instead of animals – something went wrong.
  5. Minions in starring roles – cartoon sacrilege.
  6. Dinosaurs instead of sheep – the shepherd is clearly up to no good.
  7. Batman and Robin among the Magi – saving a baby?
  8. Homer Simpson instead of Joseph – “D’oh! Where’s Mary?”
  9. Pokémon watching the scene – Pikachu replacing an angel.
  10. Transformers among the shepherds – Optimus Prime brought back the gold.

11-20: Strange Materials

  1. Marshmallow creche – A sweet Christmas before it melts.
  2. An ice scene that melts – art is short-lived.
  3. Pasta figures – angels with pasta instead of hair.
  4. Stone creche – the statues look too rough.
  5. Glass figures – everyone looks like ghosts.
  6. Wooden dummies – missing faces and emotions.
  7. Cheese figures – tempting but weird.
  8. Giant balloons – a toddler the size of a car.
  9. Knitted characters – cozy but too toy-like.
  10. Sand sculptures washed away by rain – a disaster.

21-30: Completely ridiculous compositions

  7. Fluorescent figures – overly acidic colors.
  8. Animals with human faces – a frightening experiment.
  9. Snow creche that melted – short-lived art.
  10. Giant baby Jesus – unnatural proportions.

31-40: Completely failed ideas

  2. Plastic bottle figures – eco-friendly but ugly.
  3. Robot nursery – futuristic failure.

Some of these creches elicit laughter, others bewilderment, and some fear. 2013 gave us many strange interpretations of the traditional scene, proving that creativity sometimes goes too far!
