The nativity scene is an important symbol of the holiday, but not all interpretations of this scene are in keeping with the spirit of Christmas. In 2013, the internet exploded with new waves of absurd, frightening and just plain unfortunate creches. We’ve rounded up 50 of the weirdest and worst examples.

1-10: Absurd characters

  1. Yoda in the manger – “May Christmas be with you.”
  2. Darth Vader bringing gifts – if the Magi were Sith.
  3. Ronald McDonald as a shepherd – a fast food Christmas.
  4. Alien and Predator instead of animals – something went wrong.
  5. Minions in starring roles – cartoon sacrilege.
  6. Dinosaurs instead of sheep – the shepherd is clearly up to no good.
  7. Batman and Robin among the Magi – saving a baby?
  8. Homer Simpson instead of Joseph – “D’oh! Where’s Mary?”
  9. Pokémon watching the scene – Pikachu replacing an angel.
  10. Transformers among the shepherds – Optimus Prime brought back the gold.

11-20: Strange Materials

  1. Marshmallow creche – A sweet Christmas before it melts.
  2. An ice scene that melts – art is short-lived.
  3. Pasta figures – angels with pasta instead of hair.
  4. Stone creche – the statues look too rough.
  5. Glass figures – everyone looks like ghosts.
  6. Wooden dummies – missing faces and emotions.
  7. Cheese figures – tempting but weird.
  8. Giant balloons – a toddler the size of a car.
  9. Knitted characters – cozy but too toy-like.
  10. Sand sculptures washed away by rain – a disaster.

21-30: Completely ridiculous compositions

  1. Cyber Christmas – baby in a capsule.
  2. Lego figures, but all mixed up – Joseph has Darth Vader’s head.
  3. Minecraft Christmas – cube incarnation.
  4. Giant plastic mannequins – look menacing.
  5. Eye-less figures – minimalism bordering on creepy.
  6. Christmas underwater – a scene with scuba divers.
  7. Fluorescent figures – overly acidic colors.
  8. Animals with human faces – a frightening experiment.
  9. Snow creche that melted – short-lived art.
  10. Giant baby Jesus – unnatural proportions.

31-40: Completely failed ideas

  1. Fast food vertep – figures made from French fries.
  2. Plastic bottle figures – eco-friendly but ugly.
  3. Robot nursery – futuristic failure.
  4. Maria with a clown face – too scary.
  5. Minimalist creche – just sticks – too simple.
  6. Christmas with Hello Kitty – a strange combination.
  7. A puppet theater where the puppets look creepy – horror.
  8. Hand-drawn cardboard figures – kindergarten level.
  9. An upside-down creche – a baby suspended from the ceiling.
  10. Christmas with memes – Doge and Grumpy Cat among the Magi.

41-50: Total absurdity

  7. Gothic-style creche – too macabre.
  8. Sheep with people’s faces – more like a horror movie.
  9. Pirates came to worship – Jack Sparrow was not called.
  10. Figures made from socks – homemade but questionable style.

Some of these creches elicit laughter, others bewilderment, and some fear. 2013 gave us many strange interpretations of the traditional scene, proving that creativity sometimes goes too far!
