  1. thanks for the heads up on this Marko – loved what he says – but was SO distracted by the bells and whistles – is it just me or did that really take away from the presentation? maybe I have passed the generation they are shooting for? maybe I’m no longer in the demographic – but I found the swirls, fireworks and light show really amateur. Do they have a toned down version for the old folks?

  2. Heidi – I’m not surprised some don’t like the “style”. I like that stuff, and think it would be much more boring without it. But what I really dig is the creatvity that says, “we’re doing this differently, even if everyone won’t like it.”.

  3. If I had the choice of buying this video with Rob just against the green screen… I’d chose that over the screensaver effect. OK, really I just wanted to call the visuals “screensaver effect.” A fine style it is.

  4. that’s exactly what it felt like Adam – Rob Bell talking on a screen saver :p

and I guess Marko – the problem I had with it is that they felt like they had to jazz it up – like it was a boring story – which I don’t think it is. I would have preferred him in a park or taking a walk like Nooma – but again – probably too old to be in the demographic.

  5. Again I still can’t believe the people I got to work with at Lake Avenue Church. Never thought that God would use so many of us. I thought we were just having a great time. Little did I know we were actually going to have some pretty big impact.

  6. The graphics helped him turn himself into a “holy fool” for God. I don’t know much about Rob Bell but was glad he got himself out there and didn’t just sit down for Christ (or something like that!) — Jeff from Palo Alto

  7. Wow, after watching this, I think I just had a seizure!

4 minutes of nothing. Talking fast with streamers in the background doesn’t make your message any less of a heresy, Rob.

  8. matt, seriously? talking about the power of the resurrection is “nothing”?? talking about the power of the resurrection is heresy? how is that? tell me what you heard in this particular video that you find to be heretical, please. (I’m asking nicely, and hope you can respond with civility also.)

  9. Matt,
How can you say “4 minutes of nothing”? I think sometimes, we take what other people say about Rob and twist that into everything he says. He’s only ever tried to be a asker of questions to make Christians stop boxing God in. The things he’s been blamed of heresy for were actually just questions he asked, not statements he said. When we have a lens on someone, I guess we can see anything. Jesus has Risen bro and that’s a BIG DEAL! 4 minutes about Jesus is also a BIG deal! Thanks Marko for sharing this!

  10. I never heard of Rob Bell before, I don’t know if this is a stand alone presentation. He obviously believes that Jesus rose from the dead. That is definitely good. What bothers me is that when the resurrection of Jesus is divorced from Jesus’ substitutionary restitution for our sins, His resurrection is meaningless. Perhaps, this was made clear in another portion, but it absent here.

  11. I’m with Marko and Marvin on this: what is he saying that is remotely near heresy? The fact of the matter is that he’s telling us the Easter story. A bit differently, yes, but it is the Easter story with some of the additional context filled in around it. It’s not a deep theological exposition, it’s the celebration of that which matters most: our God isn’t dead! If that isn’t worth talking and celebrating, I’m afraid you’ve got a bad case of some seriously dead end religion…

But, in seriousness, if anyone could fill in the blank, where is the heresy here?

  12. Hi, Marko!
Woo hoo! Thanx 4 sharing this; I love everything about it and I posted it on my fb page. Tim and I hung out with Rob when he was up in Bako for Drops like Stars. Good times, brutha, just like the old days @ Lake.
Yes, Christ is risen! Happy Easter!!! (Easter lasts for fifty days in my church, so I can keep on shouting it! :-)
    Grace, peace, love!

  13. As someone who has been critical, sometimes very critical, of Rob Bell I have to give credit where its due. Special effects aside, this video is great. Talking about the resurrection straight up is the only hope this world has. Bell shows his appreciation for all 3 articles of the creed here: He affirms creation, he affirms Christ’s resurrection defeating death, and he affirms the call of the Christian in this world. Great message, thanks for posting this, Marko.

  14. I agree with what’s been said. Wow to the message, a bit overkill on the music mixing and SFX.

We had a small group of teens watch this and they just zoned out on the “screen saver effects” (well put Adam). I had to read the script/text (from Bell’s site) for them to actually get it. But in the end, they go it and it was good.

  15. @Matt Schaffner
1 Corinthians 15: 1Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you— unless you believed in vain.

3For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ DIED FOR OUR SINS in accordance with the Scriptures, 4that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, 5and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. 7Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. 9For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. 11Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed. ~~~~ (emphasis added)

It is mainly not the words Rob Bell has included, but the words he has **failed to include**. Why did Jesus die? Did his death/resurrection show a symbol of hope? Yes it did. But why is it a symbol of hope? Because God can make things new? Yes he can. If this is *all* I know, I will go to hell.

I need to know that Jesus Christ died on the cross IN MY PLACE, for MY SIN/EVIL. And then I need to trust in HIS WORK and not my own actions/thoughts/abilities to get to heaven/defeat evil. The hope is that I can trust what he did on the cross (being the perfect sacrifice to pay for my sins/the sins of all who believe) to give me eternal life, that God will eventually end evil.

    May we all know truth.

  16. Its not just in the video, its Shane Hipps eastern meditation practices, its the jehovah’s witness theology of restoration on earth and “New” Spiritual bodies, and his absolute inability to know context fo scripture. following the same lines trust ressurection? why in the world would i trust ressurection, I trust Jesus Christ not ressurection, He is very misleading that is why a lot of people have called hima a heretic. He doesn’t have christian theology, he shares in the same words with different meanings. He also has a unitarian view of salvation, that no matter what everyone is going to heaven. There is A LOT wrong with his theology, I used to love Rob and never questioned him. When i started actually using a biblical filter to see what he is saying well, it is not Christian. Honestly just doa google search and see what comes up, he doesnt have christian theology, he has a Love everything its all good theology. Umm yeah there everyone was not declared Just after christ died, we are saved by grace through faith (eph 2:8). Key word is faith, followed by repentence. SO again where did Jesus invite us to trust in ressurection? He says follow me, not follow ressurection.
