are you a bigger loser than me?

img_marko_BLpose.jpgi am currently a fat man. i’ve been up and down a bit on weight for a while; but it’s been a long time (maybe 7 or 8 years ago?) that i was at a weight i was happy with. and i’m currently the heaviest i’ve ever been (though, yes, i am sticking my stomach out in this picture!).

it’s time to do something about it.

but i need some help. a year ago, when my friend matt mcnutt went on the tv show “the biggest loser” (and almost won), he suggested we run a “ys biggest loser” competition alongside. i wasn’t interested, enough. but now i am.

i suggested this to our web peeps a week ago, and they quickly decided it should be called, “be a bigger loser than marko contest,” which i thought was fantastic. we announced it about 36 hours ago on the ys update email, and already have 128 people who are going to join me and compete with me. amazing — none of us thought the response would be that big. we’re scrambling to work out all the rules and stuff, which we’ll announce next week. but know that there will be some real prizes, like national youth workers convention registrations and stacks of ys books and such.

we’re going to officially kick it off on february 4 and go three months. we’ll post starting and ending pics and weights, as well some updates along the way (i’m not sure how often yet — it might be every week). there will be a few hoops to jump through for those who compete — but we’ll clarify all that next week.

in the mean time, if you want to join us, send an email to [email protected] expressing your interest. we’ll make sure you get all the details!

i plan on being a big loser! want to join me?

  1. Hey Marko…good luck with the weight loss. Just keep remembering that God gave you an awesome life and He wants you to take care of it. We want you around for a long time too.

I also thought that it was ironic that right under your “contest” section was recipes for blonde brownies! Stay away from those and get healthy soon.

  2. Yeah I noticed that brownie recipe down there too.

    What’s up with that?

I used to do a sport that required me to be big – flipping telephone poles and throwing heavy things far. I got up to 298 eventually. Now that I’ve gotten out of it I’m down under 190ish. So I guess I’m already a loser.

My trick? Eat less and move more.

You should do one of those digital camera things where you take a pic of your body every day or so. I wish I would’ve done that. It would have looked cool in a slide show.

  3. Dang…
I was debating whether or not to do this…then I saw Andy’s doing it. Could be interesting to see what everyone looks like by the time we’re in Chicago.

  4. That’s terrible timing – you’re coming to see me that week and I’ve already invested significant resources in a ‘fatten up the Americans’ fund. what a waste!

  5. True story: My doctor said that i needed to lose weight and later he asked what I did for a living. When I told him i was a youth pastor he said: “Well, I suppose you’re on a diet of pizza and soda then.”
