Nativity creches are traditional scenes depicting the birth of Jesus Christ. However, not all of them are done with reverence and craftsmanship. In 2012, the internet was filled with photos of the most ridiculous, frightening and just plain illogical creches. Here are 42 of the worst of them:

1-10: Failed Materials

  1. Puppet Nightmare – a scene with plastic puppets with motionless faces.
  2. Marshmallow creche – Marshmallow characters melted under the lights.
  3. Plush Monsters – Baby Jesus surrounded by strange plush toys.
  4. Macaroni figures – angels looked like monsters with macaroni instead of hair.
  5. Glass ghosts – a creche of transparent figures resembled a mystical ritual.
  6. Cheese sculptures – it’s hard to take the nativity scene seriously when all the figures are edible.
  7. Plastic Hell – too cheap Chinese figurines with no faces.
  8. Lego version with monsters – weird details made the characters look scary.
  9. Paper Horror – poorly drawn figures that resembled children’s scribbles.
  10. Knitted creche – cute, but a little too nondescript.

11-20: Weird Characters

  1. Dinosaurs instead of animals – shepherds herding raptors.
  2. Star Wars – Yoda as a wizard.
  3. Superhero creche – Batman watching a baby.

21-30: Frightening interpretations

  1. Faceless statues – heads with no facial features.
  2. Hyper-realistic babies – looked too weird.
  3. Huge eyes – puppet figures with crazy stares.
  4. Shadows instead of figures – black silhouettes looked ominous.
  5. Masked characters – like a scene from a horror movie.
  6. Giant baby – the disproportionality ruined the composition.
  7. Zombie version – holy horror movie.
  8. Glass heads – blank faces with no emotion.
  9. Cyber-vertex – all made of metal parts.
  10. Fluorescent colors – acidic hues not associated with Christmas.

31-42: Complete absurdity

  1. Food creche – figures made of bacon and cheese.
  2. An icy nightmare – slippery and indistinct outlines.
  3. Cubism in religion – too abstract.
  4. Sandy creche – the rain washed it away.
  5. Minimalist – just empty boxes.
  6. Christmas in space – astronauts instead of shepherds.
  7. Sweet creche – chocolate figures melted.
  8. Giant creche – huge statues scared children.
  9. Wooden bobbleheads – no emotion or detail.
  10. Pumpkin figures – more Halloween than Christmas.
  11. Upside down creche – Baby Jesus suspended from the ceiling.
  12. Foam composition – everything looked like a pile of soap.

These creches reminded the world that in the pursuit of originality it is important not to forget about symbolism and respect for tradition!
